How does HRA exemption work?
Under Section 10(13A), the exempt part of your HRA is the lowest of three amounts: the actual HRA you receive, your rent minus 10% of your basic salary, and 50% of your basic salary if you live in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) or 40% otherwise. Whatever is left is added to your taxable income.
Why use our HRA calculator?
It compares all three limits automatically and shows you exactly why a particular figure applies, so you can plan rent and HRA to maximise your tax savings without manual math.

Frequently asked questions
Which cities count as metro for HRA?
Only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai qualify for the 50% of basic salary limit. For all other Indian cities the limit is 40%.
What if my rent is less than 10% of my basic salary?
The 'rent minus 10% of basic' component becomes zero or negative, which usually means you get no HRA exemption for that period.
Can I claim HRA without rent receipts?
Rent receipts are required for exemption claims. If your rent exceeds ₹1 lakh a year, you typically also need the landlord's PAN details.
